Information about GATE Exam


- Primarily popular as entrance to M.Tech of the IITs/NITs and IISc

- Also popular as entrance test for jobs in the PSUs (Public Sector Units) of the government of India

- Conducted by the IITs and IISc

- Conducted in end-January or early February

- Computer Based Test conducted across 23 branches of engineering

- About 8-9 lakh people answer the test every year

GATE Paper

- Objective type test with MCQs and Numerical Questions

- 3 hours test with 65 questions worth 100 marks

- Comprises thirty five 1-mark questions and thirty 2-mark questions

- MCQ questions have negative marking of one-third of the marks

- Numerical questions have no negative marks

- Virtual Scientific Calculator is provided


GATE Paper Pattern

- 15 marks reserved for General Aptitude

- About 8-12 marks of Engineering Mathematics (except for Architecture, Chemistry, Geology, Life Science, Mathematics and Physics test papers)

- Rest all are technical questions from core engineering subjects. See syllabus for your branch of Engineering

- Questions are both concept-based and application-based
