GATE Scoring System

GATE Scoring System

  1. Every GATE aspirants comes across this doubt as GATE is conducted for 23 papers and there is talk of marks as well as scores.
  2. So why and how exactly the scores are calculated; what is the GATE Scoring System? GATE Scoring System (Normalization Process) is the methodology used to convert the raw marks of the candidates into scores after computing according to the specifications prescribed by the GATE authorities.
  3. GATE is conducted in 23 papers out of which 5 papers namely ME, CE, CS, EC and EE are held in multiple sessions (two or three) as the number of applicants for these papers are very high and the exam cannot be held for these in a single session. The rest of the GATE papers have relative lesser number of candidates and therefore don’t require to be held in multiple sessions.
  4. GATE Scoring System (Normalization) will be different for the single session and multiple session GATE papers. While the raw marks of the single session GATE papers will be used for computing the GATE scores, the actual marks for multiple sessions will be normalized and these normalized marks will be used to compute the GATE scores.
For all those papers conducted in single session, only actual GATE marks will be considered to calculate the GATE Score.

So let’s dig-in a bit more and try to de-mystify the GATE Scoring System to understand how the GATE scores are calculated.

For all multi-session papers, the following three parameters calculated to obtain the result of each candidate:

  • Actual GATE Marks
  • Normalized GATE Marks
  • GATE Score

For all single session papers, the following two parameters defined in the result of each candidate:

  • Actual GATE Marks
  • GATE Score
Actual GATE Marks:
  1. For multiple choice questions, 1 mark is awarded for every correct answer, and 1/3 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer.
  2. There is no negative marking in case of numerical questions.
  3. GATE actual (raw) marks are awarded out of a total of 100 marks, for around 65 questions.
Normalized GATE Marks:
  1. The normalization is done based on the fundamental assumption that “in all multi-session GATE papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions”.
  2. This assumption is justified since the number of candidates appearing in multi-session papers in GATE 2018 is large and the procedure of allocation of session to candidates is random. Further it is also ensured that for the same multi-session paper, the number of candidates allotted in each session is of the same order of magnitude.
  3. Based on the above, and considering various normalization methods, the committee arrived at the following formula for calculating the normalized marks for the multi-session papers.
GATE Marks Normalization:
  1. After the evaluation of the answers, the raw marks obtained by a candidate will be converted to a normalized GATE Score. The following formula is used for calculation of Normalized Marks for CE, CS, EC, EE and ME papers (multi-session papers).
  2. Normalization mark of jth candidate in the ith session M?ij is given by

  3. where…
    • Mij: is the actual marks obtained by the jth candidate in ith session
    • M?tg : is the average marks of the top 0.1% of the candidates considering all sessions
    • Mqg : is the sum of mean and standard deviation marks of the candidates in the paper considering all sessions
    • M?ti: is the average marks of the top 0.1% of the candidates in the ith session
    • Miq: is the sum of the mean marks and standard deviation of the ith session
  4. After evaluation of the answers, normalized marks based on the above formula will be calculated corresponding to the raw marks obtained by a candidate and the GATE 2018 Score will be calculated based on the normalized marks
GATE Score:
  1. GATE score is calculated out of 1000. This GATE score computed based on the marks (normalized) obtained by the candidate and mean marks of top 0.1% or top 10 of the candidates who appeared in the same paper including multi-sessions.
GATE Score Calculation:
  1. For all papers for which there is only one session, actual marks obtained will be used for calculating the GATE 2018 Score. GATE 2018 score will be calculated using the formula,
  2. 3. In the above formulae,
    • M : marks obtained by the candidate (actual marks for single session papers and normalized marks for multi-session papers)
    • Mq : is the qualifying marks for general category candidate in the paper
    • M?t : is the mean of marks of top 0.1% or top 10 (whichever is larger) of the candidates who appeared in the paper (in case of multi-session papers including all sessions)
    • Sq : 350, is the score assigned to Mq
    • St : 900, is the score assigned to M?t
  4. In the GATE 2018 score formula, Mq is usually 25 marks (out of 100) or (?+?), whichever is larger. Here ? is the mean and ? is the standard deviation of marks of all the candidates who appeared in the paper.
  5. The GATE 2017 Committee has the authority to decide the qualifying mark/score for each GATE paper. In case any claim or dispute arises in respect of GATE 2017, the Courts and Tribunals in Roorkee alone shall have the exclusive jurisdiction to entertain and settle any such dispute or claim.
