  • Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or the GATE exam is an entrance exam conducted jointly by IISc and the IITs.
  • The purpose of the exam is two fold. Admission to the M.Tech programs of IISc and the IITs, NITs and some other colleges. Most Public Sector Units (PSUs) also use GATE as a qualifying exam.
  • The exam is a computer based test held in January or February every year.
  • The exam comprises multiple choice questions (MCQs) and numerical questions.
  • There are 30 one-mark questions and 35 two-mark questions. Hence, the exam comprises 65 questions worth 100 marks to be answered in 3 hours.
  • There are 23 versions of the GATE exam for various branches of engineering and science. The most popular branches are Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science.
  • Over 8 lakh students sit for the various branches of the GATE exam every year, while about 1 lakh qualify.
